Jane graduated with a Masters degree (MSc) in travel medicine in 1998 from the University of Glasgow, being in the first cohort to take this new dynamic course. Throughout her career in travel medicine, she has worked clinically in primary care on a part time basis until the COVID-19 pandemic. However, since 2000 she has also taken a strong role in education and development of travel medicine practice, which she continues today.
Jane was an elected Founding Executive Board Member of the British Travel Health Association (BTHA) and went on to help organise the inaugural BTHA conference and lead the second year’s meeting. It was at this point she was elected as Chair of the Royal College of Nursing Travel Health Forum, a position she held for six years. Since that time she has been involved in four editions of the guidance document ‘RCN Travel Health Nursing: career and competence development’. In 2008, Jane was honoured to be made a Fellow of the BGTHA.
Jane also held a leadership role as Chair of the Nurse Professional Group of the International Society of Travel Medicine. She has been involved in the ISTM since 1995 and has sat on several of committees and spoken at numerous conferences. It was a huge honour at the CISTM18 in Basel, to be jointly awarded the Jay Keystone Award for Education, along with David Shlim, for demonstrating exceptional qualities as an educator in the field of travel medicine. Dr Jay Keystone was the Keynote speaker on Jane’s travel medicine first week residential course in 1995, and his presentation ‘blew her away’, inspiring her for a future passion in travel medicine education.
In 2006, Jane became a founding Fellow and Executive Member of the Faculty of Travel Medicine (FTM) of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. She continued in many roles of the FTM including Honorary Secretary, Director of Education and Assessment, and was Dean of the Faculty of Travel Medicine, RCPSG 2018-2021, the first time a nurse has been elected to this role. During her tenure, the Good Practice Guidance for Providing a Travel Health Service was published, and she also led on the development of two new academic travel medicine courses, a diploma and professional certificate in travel medicine. She was very honoured to have the Jane Chiodini Prize for the best student in the new RCPSG Diploma in Travel Medicine couse’ named after her in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Travel Medicine. In the New Year Honours List of 2022, Jane received an MBE for services to Training and Development in Travel Medicine.
